When your employees are using macOS on their company-managed computers and you wish to have the Super Stealth version of Insightful Desktop App (a.k.a. Insightful Agent) on them there are a few steps to follow.
Additional configurations
The instruction in this article is for the manual installation. Such installations also require other manual steps in terms of System preference settings and configurations that are otherwise deployed through Configuration profiles when the application is deployed with MDM solutions such JAMF Pro, Microsoft Intune etc.
Install Insightful app on macOS via Terminal
Get your installation code from our Support team,
Paste it into Terminal,
Press enter to run the code,
Enter your macOS system admin password and press Enter,
Wait while Insightful downloads and installs the app.
Silent installation
Silent installation is performed without user interaction or interface prompts. This method can be useful as it avoids disturbing the employees and makes the process faster. For the success of the process you need the device's Admin privileges to execute the installation code. Without them you may encounter an error during the installation.
To perform a silent installation on a macOS device, run the Insightful installation code obtained from our Support team with this addition at the end of the command:
&>/dev/null&

Confirming successful installation
You can confirm that the installation is fully installed by:
Checking the dashboard: If you see the new employee on the Employees or Real-Time Insights tab on the dashboard.
Checking if the file exists in the installation location:
Go to /Library/Application Support/Crashpad,
Check for crashpad.app like shown in the image below.
If the app exists, the installation is completed.
If the app does not yet exist, please wait for the installation to complete (~3min)
Blank Password Field
The password field will not reflect your input, it will remain blank. This is the default macOS feature. If the password is incorrectly entered, you will see the Sorry, try again message.
MacOS System Permissions
To ensure all Insightful features function correctly on macOS, several system permissions must be granted. These are:
Accessibility Permission
Automation Permission
Screenshots and Screen Recording Permission
Accessibility permission
Purpose: This setup is important since without it the agent won’t be able to collect data properly and user will receive pop-ups asking to allow these settings. Please follow the steps below to enable this functionality.
After the application is successfully installed and running:
Click Open System Preferences on the first popup after installation and background configuration is over. This will take you to Security & Privacy settings
If password protected, click the lock in the lower left part to authenticate first by entering your password
Under Accessibility, check the box next to crashpad.app or Crashpad like shown in the image below
Enter users password
If Crashpad is not listed
In case you cannot find crashpad listed, please click on the + sign, enter user password and go to: /Library/Application Support/Crashpad and select crashpad.app.
Automation permission: Allow Web browser permissions - URLs
Purpose: Allowing Crashpad application to access web browsers allows the app to track URLs on those browsers. If this is not added, the application will not provide information about the URL that was used.
Close System Preferences
Make sure to have System Preferences closed before starting this.
Please follow the steps below to enable this functionality.
Run each browser after the installation of Crashpad application,
A prompt will pop up to allow access to the browser's data,
Click OK,
Go to System Preferences → Privacy & Security → Automation,
Expand the Crashpad application and check if the preferred browsers are enabled.
Do this for all the browsers
Please do this for all the browsers that you use in you company. Open each browser separately while the application is running.
Screenshots and Screen Recording permission
Purpose: If you don’t enable this preference, the Agent will not have enough permission to capture screenshots and might ask for permission when the application is started.
If you have taking screenshots and/or screen recording enabled, please follow these steps to allow Agent to collect them.
Open System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Screen Recording,
Find Crashpad application,
Enable Crashpad to collect screenshots.
If Crashpad is not listed
In case you cannot find Crashpad listed, please click on the + sign, enter user password and go to: /Library/Application Support/Crashpad and select crashpad.app.
After installing and allowing access, Crashpad is ready to be used and the employees will automatically appear on Admin dashboards in Insightful and their data will start to be tracked.
