Insightful MCP server: Ask your AI assistant about your workforce data

Learn what the Insightful MCP server is and how it lets AI tools like Claude or ChatGPT answer questions from your Insightful data (read-only) and within the permissions you already have

Written by Petar Jelaca

The Insightful MCP server lets your AI client - Claude, ChatGPT, or any other MCP-compatible tool - securely connect to your Insightful workspace and answer questions using your own data.

You ask your AI assistant (and in natural language too) something along the lines of “How many hours did the design team log last week?” or “Which apps did my team use most yesterday?”, and you will get an answer drawn directly from your live Insightful data.

The connection works through MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard that lets AI tools securely request data from other apps. The server uses the same permission model you already use, so it never exposes anything you couldn't already see in the app - and it reads data only.

It can never create, edit, or delete anything in your account. Below you'll find who can use it, what it can and can't access, and how privacy and control work.

Going further with other data sources

Because MCP is an open standard, you can combine Insightful with other sources connected to the same AI client. This lets you ask questions that span multiple systems - for example, cross-referencing tracked time from Insightful against project data from another tool - and uncover insights at the intersection of the systems you already use.

Who can use it

The connector respects your existing Insightful role. If you can't see it in Insightful, the AI can't see it either.

  • Admins who connect can ask about the entire organization - every team, group, and employee.

  • Managers can only ask about the employees, teams, and groups they already manage. Requests also can't reach data outside their feature permissions.

What it can access

The connector can answer questions across six areas of your Insightful data:

  • People & structure - employees, teams, groups, and manager relationships.

  • Time & attendance - shifts, clock-in/out, timesheets, lateness, and tracked-time summaries.

  • Productivity - productive/neutral breakdowns, per-app labels, and utilization %.

  • App & website usage - which apps and sites were used, and for how long.

  • Projects & tasks - project and task lists and time logged, for Project Management users.

  • Alerts - attendance and security alert history, such as lateness or irregular behavior alerts.

What it can't do

To set expectations up front, the connector has clear boundaries:

  • No write actions. It can't create projects, edit schedules, adjust alerts, or change settings. Everything that changes your account still happens in the app.

  • No screenshots or recordings. Even where those features are enabled, the connector can't retrieve screenshots, screen recordings, or activity logs - only the metrics derived from them.

  • No low-level or forensic data. It works with aggregated summaries, not raw keystroke or click fragments or event-by-event logs.

  • Very broad requests can hit a limit. Extremely large requests for certain data types can exceed the AI tool's context limit. In those cases the connector may narrow the request, for example by date range, so results come back complete rather than partial.

Privacy & security

You are in full control. You opt in to have your own AI tool read your workspace to answer your questions. No data goes to Insightful's AI, and Insightful can't see the prompts you ask.

Admins can see and revoke access. Every active connection is visible to admins in Insightful, under Settings → Connected Apps. You can audit who is connected - including the user, application, scope, when it was authorized, and when it was last used - and switch a connection off instantly by selecting it and clicking Disconnect.

How to connect

For detailed, step-by-step setup instructions, see How to set up Insightful MCP server.

One-click setup is coming soon. Insightful will be listed in the Claude and ChatGPT connector directories, so you'll be able to add it in a couple of clicks. Until then, connect manually using the guide above.

Frequently asked questions

Can the connector change anything in my account?

No. It only reads data - it can't change, create, or delete anything.

Does it see more than I can?

No. It follows the permissions you've already set in Insightful. If you can't see it in the app, the AI can't see it either.

Can it access screenshots or recordings?

No. It returns metrics only - never screenshots, recordings, or raw activity logs.

Does Insightful see my prompts or analyze my data with AI?

No. Your prompts go to your own AI tool. No data goes to Insightful's AI, and Insightful can't see what you ask.

How do I turn it off?

Admins can switch off any active connection instantly from Insightful's settings (Settings → Connected Apps), at any time.
