Admins and Managers who have the “manage organization” permission can start collecting location data without needing to set up office locations, which makes it easier and faster to utilize location based reporting.
This feature is disabled by default and can be turned on and managed from the Settings → Reports → Location Insights → Auto-detection.
What addresses are assumed to be office locations?
When more than two employees connect from the same IP or MAC address on at least two different days within a rolling seven-day period, the system automatically recognizes this address as an “Office Auto-detected” location. This address is then added to the single, automatically detected office location list.
If the recurring IP or MAC address is already linked to a manually defined office location, it will not be added to the auto-detected list, since its location is already known.
Managing auto-detected addresses
Users cannot delete the auto-detected office location list itself, unlike manually defined office locations. However, users can still manage individual addresses inside it to ensure location reports remain accurate.
User who reviews list of the auto-detected addresses can manage them by:
Looking into which employees have connected from a particular IP/MAC address, and identifying the actual physical office behind the data.
Assigning auto-detected IP/MAC address to an existing manually defined office location.
Excludeing any specific IP/MAC address from ever being auto-detected again in case they are false positives.
Excluding addresses from auto-detection
Users have the option to manually exclude IP or MAC addresses from the office automatic detection process. To do this, just add those addresses to the exclusion list on the same settings page.
You can also search addresses added to that list and remove them from the list.
Addresses already linked to a predefined office location cannot be excluded.
Consider also setting up Office Locations
Using Office Auto-detection works best alongside manually defined office locations. Check our guide on how to set up office locations and assign network identifiers.
